This music was originally based on “Chaconne” which won the 1st prize in Sasagawa Competition in 1976. It was published from Nippon Music Foundation. It’s been rewritten to make the length almost double and made a spectacular excitement to lead out the potential of the mandolin orchestra. “Chaconne” is a type of musical composition, popular in the baroque era. The theme of a music is constantly changing and progressing. It was commissioned and first performed by mandolin orchestra of Kobe University in 1981.

「シャコンヌ」とはバロック時代の音楽スタイルの一つで、テーマが次々と変奏されて大きな形の音楽を作る音楽形式です。この曲は中世の教会旋法的なハーモニーによる8小節のテーマが次々に変奏されて全体を形作る、という方法によって作曲されています。原曲は吹奏楽の為に作曲し、笹川賞第一位を受賞した「シャコンヌ」が基になっていますが、この作品「グランドシャコンヌ」は、長さも2倍になり壮大な盛り上がりが作られる様に書き直されています。このテーマのハーモニー進行は、作曲者として、とても気に入っているので、スムースに仕事を進める事が出来ました。1981年、神戸大学マンドリンクラブによって委嘱、初演されました。
